The Detroit Free Pressreported Thursday that a stretch of Milwaukee Avenue was renamed to celebrate the iconic Motown artist, and on Wednesday the signs displaying Stevie Wonder Avenue were presented in front of the singer and Detroit locals.

SEE ALSO: Welcome to 2016: Here's that Ariana Grande and Stevie Wonder duetIn the presence of about 400 fans and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, 66-year-old Wonder was given the honor of unveiling the street sign, located just a mile away from Motown's original headquarters at the corners of Milwaukee Avenue at Woodward.
According to The Detroit Free Press,Wonder gratefully told his fans, "I know things can't last forever, but I'm going to freeze this moment in my mind and make it last," and later answered questions at a news conference.
To further thank the singer for all he has given to the world, Duggan also presented Wonder with an honorary key to the city. "You changed history, and you did it getting your start here in Detroit," he said.
In classic Stevie fashion, the singer even broke into a rendition of his beloved hit, "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." So sweet.

Though the Stevie Wonder Avenue signs are currently stationed at two corners of the Milwaukee-Woodward intersection, Wonder's cousin, Sharon DuMas, who led the campaign, hopes the city will rename the entire avenue in the future.
